Download and configure Miami's Cisco AnyConnect VPN

  • Where do I go to download Miami's VPN client?
  • I need to use SPSS on my computer at home over break. Could you send me the VPN download that I would need to use this and connect to the Miami server?

Rationale

  • A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to establish a secure connection to the Miami network. All faculty, students, and staff are encouraged to use our VPN client on University-owned and personally-owned computers
  • Many University resources require that you use a VPN connection when accessing our network from an off-campus location

Resolution

VPN for macOS, Windows, and Linux computers

  1. Identify and and download the appropriate VPN version for your computer
  2. When prompted, enter your Miami UniqueID and password
  3. Launch the installer after it downloads
    • Windows users: If prompted to modify, repair, or remove an existing installation, select Remove. Once removed, run the installer again
  4. Follow the prompts to install the client
  5. Once installed, launch the AnyConnect client
  6. In the connection field, enter muvpn.miamioh.edu
  7. When prompted, enter your UniqueID and MUnet password
  8. Tap OK to connect

 

VPN for Android and iOS devices

  • Cisco AnyConnect for Android phones is only available on Google Play Store
  1. Go to Google Play Store to install AnyConnect to your Android phone
  2. Once installed on your device, tap the AnyConnect icon to open the app
  3. Tap OK to accept the license agreement
  4. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap Connections
  5. Tap Add New VPN Connection
  6. Tap Description and enter muvpn in the field as the name for this connection
  7. Tap OK
  8. Tap Server Address and enter muvpn.miamioh.edu in the field
  9. Tap OK
  10. Tap Done
  11. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap the AnyConnect VPN toggle to On 
  12. When prompted, enter your UniqueID and MUnet password
  13. Tap Connect

 

  • Cisco AnyConnect VPN (now Cisco Legacy AnyConnect) for iOS devices is only available on the App Store
  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the App Store
  2. Tap Search and enter Cisco Legacy AnyConnect 
  3. Tap AnyConnect
  4. On the app product page, tap Free (or Get)
    • The app is free, but you might be prompted to authenticate your Apple ID to complete the download
  5. Tap Install
  6. Tap Open
  7. Tap OK to enable the app to extend VPN capabilities of your device
  8. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap Connections
  9. Tap Add New VPN Connection
  10. Tap Description and enter muvpn in the field as the name for this connection
  11. Tap OK
  12. Tap Server Address and enter muvpn.miamioh.edu in the field
  13. Tap OK
  14. Tap Save
  15. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap the AnyConnect VPN toggle to On 
  16. When prompted, enter your UniqueID and MUnet password
  17. Tap Connect
