Reporting Tools

Introduction

Miami University offers Oracle Analytics Server (OAS) and Tableau as traditional reporting options.  IT Services may provide assistance with the use of OAS as our enterprise business intelligence solution.

Capabilities, Benefits & Features

  • Self-Serve Reporting
  • IT Services’ primary role is to provide the OAS reporting environment and access to the data; most reports are written and maintained by clients throughout the University, but IT Services develops and maintains certain dashboards and reports as well
  • Reporting is available against data in many areas, including but not limited to:
    • Student records
    • Financial information
    • IT information
    • Utilities
  • Reporting is ultimately consumed by all types of Miami constituents, plus local, state, and federal governments, auditors, etc.
  • Reporting is different than analytics — reporting shows lists of information, whereas Analytics provides views used to make decisions based on prediction

Oracle Analytics Server (OAS) provides tools and data for operational reporting.  It could be running defined reports, "point & click" queries, or using dashboards.  New reporting tools will exist within the Workday ERP.

Tableau provides the ability to create reports, dashboards, and visualizations for the dissemination of ongoing operational data.  It requires the departmental purchase of licenses which IT Services coordinates.  We offer the Tableau Bridge service to automate the updating of available data sources, but IT Services does not assist with the development within Tableau.

Who May Use It?

  • All students, faculty, and staff have access to different types of reporting based on their role at the University
