  • Duo Mobile App
    • Android, iPhone, or Windows smartphone

  • Two-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your Miami account. It allows you to verify your identity using a second factor — your smartphone or other mobile device, YubiKey U2F device, or landline — and prevents anyone else from logging in to your account
  • Duo Security and MUIT recommend the use of a smartphone and the Duo Mobile app for the best experience in two-factor authentication
  • Duo works with smartphones through the Duo Mobile app to support authentication via Duo Push (recommended) and Duo Passcode

  1. Download and install the Duo Mobile app on the smartphone you want to enroll
    • Go to the app store for your device and search for Duo Mobile (not the Google Duo app!)
    • When prompted, allow Duo Mobile to take pictures and record video
      • This enables you to scan the QR code (step 15) and activate your account
    • Make sure Notifications are enabled for the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone
      • iPhones may disable these notifications by default
  2. On your computer, open a supported browser
    • Supported browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer 8 (or later), or Opera
  3. Start your Duo enrollment process (https://www.apps.miamioh.edu/duo-validator)
    • When mandatory enrollment begins in December, unenrolled users will be prompted to enroll in Duo when they log in to any Miami University system
  4. Log in using your UniqueID and MUnet password
  5. Click the Start setup button
  6. Select Mobile phone as the type of device you want to add
  7. Click the Continue button
  8. Enter the area code and phone number of the smartphone you want to enroll
    • A green check-mark indicates that you have entered the number in the correct format
  9. Check the box to confirm that you have entered the correct phone number
  10. Click the Continue button
  11. Select the type of smartphone you want to enroll: iPhone, Android, or Windows
  12. Confirm that the Duo Mobile app is installed on your smartphone and click the I have Duo Mobile Installed button
  13. Locate the QR code in the activation window
  14. In the Duo Mobile app on your phone, tap the + (plus-symbol) button
  15. Hold your phone to your computer screen so that your device camera can scan the QR code
    • A green check mark indicates that you have successfully scanned the code
    • If you are unable to scan the QR code, click the Or have an activation link emailed to you instead link and follow these KB instructions
  16. When you see the green check mark, click the Continue button
  17. On the My Settings & Devices screen, select the authentication method you want to use
    • Duo Security and MUIT recommended that you use Duo Push
  18. Click Continue to Login to complete your enrollment
    • You will receive on-screen verification that you have enrolled successfully
  19. Click the appropriate button to authenticate your identity and complete your login

Can you resolve this issue yourself?
Can the end-user resolve the issue using the instructions given?
Or does the end-user need to request assistance from Miami UIT, a client office, or a vendor?
Yes! This is self-service with a smile.
