Duo / Enroll a smartphone for use (recommended)

Body

Objective

  • To provide instruction on setting up and enrolling a smartphone for use with Duo Security
  • To provide instruction on setting up and enrolling a smartphone through the Duo Mobile app

Scope

  • Duo Security is the system-wide, two-factor authentication security application used at Miami University
  • All current Miami University students, faculty, and staff are required to use Duo for authentication when accessing Miami systems
    • Miami's alumni, retiree, and emeriti populations are not required to enroll in Duo and will continue to use their Miami password

User

  • All current Miami University Students, Faculty, and Staff
    • (Miami's alumni, retiree, emeriti, and former student populations are not required to enroll in Duo)

Environment

  • 312306: Duo Security Two-factor Authentication
  • Duo Mobile App
    • Android, iPhone, or Windows smartphone

Rationale

  • Two-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your Miami account. It allows you to verify your identity using a second factor — your smartphone or other mobile device — and prevents anyone else from logging in to your account
  • Duo Security and MUIT recommend the use of a smartphone and the Duo Mobile app for the best experience in two-factor authentication
  • Duo works with smartphones through the Duo Mobile app to support authentication via Duo Push (recommended) and Duo Passcode

Resolution

  1. Download and install the Duo Mobile app on the smartphone you want to enroll
    • Go to the app store for your device and search for Duo Mobile (not the Google Duo app!)
    • When prompted, allow Duo Mobile to take pictures and record video
      • This enables you to scan the QR code (step 15) and activate your account
    • Make sure Notifications are enabled for the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone
      • iPhones may disable these notifications by default
  2. Open a supported browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer 8 (or later), or Opera
  3. If you have already enrolled in Duo, follow these KB instructions to access Duo's Self Service Portal
  4. If this your first time enrolling in Duo, log in to any Miami University system using your UniqueID and MUnet password
    • Click the Start setup button
  5. Select Mobile phone as the type of device you want to add
  6. Click the Continue button
  7. Enter the area code and phone number of the smartphone you want to enroll
    • A check-mark indicates that you have entered the number in the correct format
  8. Check the box to confirm that you have entered the correct phone number
  9. Click the Continue button
  10. Select the type of smartphone you want to enroll: iPhone, Android, or Windows
  11. Confirm that the Duo Mobile app is installed on your smartphone and click the I have Duo Mobile Installed button
  12. Locate the QR code in the activation window
  13. In the Duo Mobile app on your phone, tap the + (plus-symbol) button
  14. Hold your phone to your computer screen so that your device camera can scan the QR code
    • A check mark indicates that you have successfully scanned the code
    • If you are unable to scan the QR code, click the Or have an activation link emailed to you instead link and follow these KB instructions
  15. When you see the check mark, click the Continue button
  16. On the My Settings & Devices screen, select the authentication method you want to use
    • Duo Security and MUIT recommended that you use Duo Push
  17. Click Continue to Login to complete your enrollment
    • You will receive on-screen verification that you have enrolled successfully
  18. Click the appropriate button to authenticate your identity and complete your login
