Data Analytics

Introduction

Data Analytics allows departments and divisions to make data-informed, proactive decisions using institutional data. In contrast to Reporting which only lists and summarizes data, analytics facilitates the free-form combination of data along predefined lines.

Capabilities, Benefits and Key Features

  • Analyzes data
  • Combines data from disparate systems and sources (data silos) and the creation of new data (including data history) and structures
  • Creates and maintains structures that allow for data exploration and reporting
  • Support of the Oracle tool; coordination of licensing for Tableau
  • Identification of data anomalies in the source system of OAS

Oracle Analytics Server (OAS) provides tools like Answers, BI Publisher or Data Visualization to join subject areas to explore data.  Subject areas are vetted data sources from enterprise data, primarily from the Banner ERP, that are organized in the data warehouse.  The addition of new data and models is on hold for the implementation of Workday.

Tableau software provides an option to upload and manipulate data sources independently of the data warehouse.  It allows the exploration of data through reports, dashboards, or visualizations.

Who may use it?

  • Faculty and staff (deans, department chairs, directors)
  • Faculty, staff and students of Miami University with an authenticated password

Cost

There is no cost for OAS. It is funded through VP of Finance and Business Services and IT.
