Problem
- How do I give a student extra time to complete a timed Canvas quiz?
- How do I add extra time accommodations for quizzes in Canvas?
Resolution
It is possible to add extra time for certain students on timed quizzes in Canvas in both Classic and New Quizzes. If you are using all New Quizzes, you can add extra time to the quiz timers on all course quizzes for a student at once:
Classic Quiz
- Once you publish a Classic Quiz, you can add extra time using the Moderate Quiz page. You can set availability dates to prevent students from accessing the quiz before you've added any necessary accommodations. You must do this for each quiz, but if you have more than one student with the same accommodation, you can moderate each quiz for more than one student at a time. Refer to the Canvas Guides for more information:
New Quizzes
- You will use the Moderate tab, accessible from the Build link, to add accommodations in New Quizzes. Using the Course Accommodation menu for a student, you can give additional time (e.g., add an extra 30 minutes for a 60-minute quiz, like in a Classic Quiz), or if your course quizzes have different time limits, you can select to use the time limit multiplier to give the student 1.5 (150%) of the allotted time for each quiz. These settings can then be applied to all quizzes in the course (if using New Quizzes). Review the Canvas Guide for more information:
Note: The quiz timer in either quiz version does not affect the availability dates for a quiz. If you have set an until date for a quiz to 11:59 p.m. and a student with 90 minutes starts the quiz at 11:00 p.m., the quiz will auto-submit at 11:59 p.m., regardless of how much extra time was added to the quiz timer. If a student will be taking a quiz during class time or in the testing center, you may need to add additional assignment access using the Assign To function for the specific student to ensure the exam's availability window is at least as long as the time provided for the quiz
While there is currently no global retirement date for Classic Quizzes, Miami Online recommends you begin using New Quizzes. You can request a Canvas project site (sandbox) to begin creating, migrating to, and experimenting with New Quizzes at your own pace
