Lock down a quiz to a specific IP address range / Canvas

Problem

  • How do I restrict a quiz to a specific IP address so that only students in a classroom can access it?

Resolution

  • Miami University uses NAT, which does not allow the restriction of IP addresses
  • You can use other Canvas settings to restrict a quiz to in-class students, like requiring an access code you provide in class before the quiz and using availability dates to provide a strict window to take the quiz. Review the Canvas Guides to see how to use these options based on your quiz version:

Classic Quiz

New Quizzes

Note: If students with extra time accommodations will take the quiz in a testing center, use the Assign To function to extend the quiz window for the specific student(s), in addition to adding the time accommodation for the student(s) in the quiz. Refer to the KB articles to allow a student extra time on a timed quiz and to open a quiz or assignment for a student for more information

While there is currently no global retirement date for Classic Quizzes, Miami Online recommends you begin using New Quizzes. You can request a Canvas project site (sandbox) to begin creating, migrating to, and experimenting with New Quizzes at your own pace
