Wi-Fi Overview

Introduction

Wi-Fi is one of the most important utilities IT Services provides to the University. As more coursework and administrative actions take place online, it’s imperative to have access to a robust, reliable network capable of handling heavy load.

There are several different networks at Miami that you will come in contact with:

  • MU-Wireless: The main network that you will use for most of your devices and purposes
  • MU-Gaming: For gaming and television streaming devices, like Xbox or Roku
  • eduroam: A network supported by more than [x] universities around the world. Using your Miami email address and password, you can log in to the eduroam network at any campus or location that offers it
  • MU-Guest: A secure guest network that doesn’t require login for friends, colleagues, parents, and guests

Capabilities, Benefits, and Key Features

MU-Wireless, MU-Gaming, and eduroam

  • ​​​Stream 4k video at all times of the day and night across all Oxford and regional campus locations
  • No throttling or data caps
  • Same service in popular outside spaces as inside
  • Seamlessly roam from location to location without dropping service

MU-Guest

  • Meets basic needs for university guests; minimal buffering while streaming
  • Available all times of day and night across all Oxford and regional campus locations
  • Speeds capped at 3 Mbps
  • Same service in popular outside spaces as inside
  • Seamlessly roam from location to location without dropping service

Limitations:

Who may use it?

MU-Wireless

Current students, faculty, and staff with Miami email accounts should connect to MU-Wireless.

MU-Gaming

Devices, such as gaming consoles, smart TVs, may be automatically identified when connected to the MU-Gaming network. If not, students, faculty, and staff may register a device to use this network.

eduroam

If your home school participates in the eduroam network, you may log in with your full email address and password from that school.

MU-Guest

Connect to MU-Guest and open a web browser to accept the terms of use if you are a campus guest, such as parents, family, friends, and visitors.

Students, faculty, and staff should avoid using this Wi-Fi network because it is slower and has other limitations.

Are there technology requirements?

  • Modern web browser
  • Modern operating system, such as MacOS 10, Windows 10, IOS
  • Some gaming devices, such as XBox One,  require a wired connection

Is there a charge to me or my department?

No separate charge exists for current students, faculty, and staff.

Guest service is provided as a courtesy.
