AnyConnect VPN / Use on macOS computer

Objective

  • To provide instructions on using Cisco AnyConnect VPN on a macOS computer

Environment

  • 10393: VPN AnyConnect Client
    • Cisco AnyConnect VPN
  • Security
  • Software & Apps
  • Personally Owned Computer
  • University-owned Computer
    • macOS

Rationale

  • Miami has an Internet Firewall that restricts the functions that can be performed by computers that are NOT directly connected to Miami's network. VPN allows a computer that is accessing our network from off-campus to behave as if it is on-campus

Resolution

  1. Press Command-key+space-bar to open Spotlight Search
  2. Enter AnyConnect in the Spotlight search field
  3. Double-click the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client application
  4. In the AnyConnect window, the VPN: Connected to field should be pre-populated with muvpn.miamioh.edu
    • If not, enter muvpn.miamioh.edu into the connection field
  5. When prompted, enter your UniqueID and MUnet password
    • Entering the password will generate a Duo Push to your installed Duo app on your first enrolled device —  if you don't have Duo Mobile installed on a device or you prefer a different authentication method, a comma is required followed by your preferred Duo method. Using a comma after the password will allow the following options: push2, passphrase, sms, sms2
      • Example: 'password, [Duo option]'
    • Review this KB article for more on how to use Duo authentication in VPN
  6. Tap OK to connect
  7. After a few moments, the window will disappear
    • Note the Cisco AnyConnect VPN lock icon in the Apple toolbar near the top-right of your screen

Disconnect VPN

  • To close the VPN connection, click the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client lock icon and select the Disconnect option
