Allow different submission types for assignment / Canvas

Problem

• What are the different ways students can submit assignments?
• What assignment submission type allows students to submit a Google Drive file?
• How do I restrict the file types students can submit to an assignment?

Resolution

• Online assignments in Canvas support students submitting formatted text using the Rich Content Editor, website URLs, annotated files, media recordings, uploaded files, or external tools. You can select one or more submission types when creating the assignment. Refer to the following Canvas Guides for more information:

• While students may upload Google Drive files when the "File Uploads" submission type is selected, they may also share Google Drive files via URL when the "Text Entry" or "Website URL" submission type is selected. The difference here will be how the submission will appear in SpeedGrader:
  • Google Drive file upload: Upon submission, the file will be converted to its Microsoft counterpart and appear in SpeedGrader as the respective Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file. This ensures the file cannot be altered after submission, can be viewed and annotated in DocViewer​​, and can generate a Turnitin report (if enabled)
  • Google Drive file links: These files will open in Google Drive and cannot be viewed in SpeedGrader, though you will have access to the file activity and version history. Students will need to ensure proper file-sharing permissions for you to access the file
• To create an assignment that requires students to use and submit a specific Google Drive file, refer to the KB article to add a Google LTI 1.3 assignment, which has options to view in Google Drive and grade in SpeedGrader
• To restrict the types of files students can submit for the File Uploads submission, select the Restrict Upload File Types check box and enter a list of accepted extensions in the Allowed File Extensions field (.jpg, .pdf, .docx, etc.)
