AnyConnect VPN / Download and configure for secure off-campus connection

Rationale

  • A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to establish a secure connection to the Miami network. All faculty, students, and staff are encouraged to use our VPN client on University-owned and personally owned computers
  • Many University resources require that you use a VPN connection when accessing our network from an off-campus location

Resolution

VPN for macOS, Windows, and Linux computers

  1. Identify and download the appropriate VPN version for your computer
  2. When prompted, enter your Miami UniqueID and password
  3. Launch the installer after it downloads
  4. Once installed, launch the AnyConnect client
  5. In the connection field, enter muvpn.MIAMIOH.edu
    • If you receive an untrusted message in response, check that the name is correct
  6. When prompted, enter your UniqueID and MUnet password including Duo authentication
  7. Tap OK to connect

 

VPN for Android devices

  • Cisco AnyConnect for Android phones is only available on Google Play Store
  1. Go to Google Play Store to install AnyConnect to your Android phone
  2. Once installed on your device, tap the AnyConnect icon to open the app
  3. Tap OK to accept the license agreement
  4. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap Connections
  5. Tap Add New VPN Connection
  6. Tap Description and enter muvpn in the field as the name for this connection
  7. Tap OK
  8. Tap Server Address and enter muvpn.MIAMIOH.edu in the field
    • If you receive an untrusted message in response, you entered the wrong text — try again
  9. Tap OK
  10. Tap Done
  11. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap the AnyConnect VPN toggle to On 
  12. When prompted, enter your UniqueID and MUnet password including Duo authentication
  13. Tap Connect

 

VPN for iOS devices

  • Cisco AnyConnect VPN (now Cisco Legacy AnyConnect) for iOS devices is only available on the App Store
  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the App Store
  2. Tap Search and enter Cisco AnyConnect 
  3. Tap Cisco Secure Client AnyConnect VPN
  4. On the app product page, tap Free (or Get)
    • The app is free, but you might be prompted to authenticate your Apple ID to complete the download
  5. Tap Install
  6. Tap Open
  7. Tap OK to enable the app to extend VPN capabilities of your device
  8. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap Connections
  9. Tap Add New VPN Connection
  10. Tap Description and enter muvpn in the field as the name for this connection
  11. Tap OK
  12. Tap Server Address and enter muvpn.MIAMIOH.edu in the field
    • If you receive an untrusted message in response, you entered the wrong text — try again
  13. Tap OK
  14. Tap Save
  15. On the Virtual Private Network screen, tap the AnyConnect VPN toggle to On 
  16. When prompted, enter your UniqueID and MUnet password including Duo authentication
  17. Tap Connect
