Use Cisco AnyConnect VPN on macOS

Issue/Question

  • How do I use the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client on my macOS?

Environment

  • Cisco AnyConnect VPN
  • macOS

Rationale

  • Miami has an Internet Firewall that restricts the functions that can be performed by computers that are NOT directly connected to Miami's network. VPN allows a computer connecting from off-campus to behave as if it is on-campus.

Resolution

  1. To open the VPN client, go to your Mac hardrive and open the Applications folder
  2. Open the Cisco folder and click the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client application
  3. In the AnyConnect window, the VPN: Connected to field should be pre-populated with muvpn.miamioh.edu; if not, enter the value into the field
  4. Enter your Miami UniqueID and MUnet password, and then click Connect
  5. After a few moments, the window will disappear
  6. You will see the Cisco AnyConnect VPN lock icon in the Apple toolbar near the top-right of your screen

Disconnect VPN

  • To close the VPN connection, control-click the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client lock icon and select the Disconnect option
