Reset keychain password

Issue/Question

  • Message agent wants to use the keychain: Please enter the keychain password. But when I enter the password, it does not accept it
  • I am being prompted for a keychain password

Environment

  • Computing: macOS
    • Keychain Access
  • Computing: University-owned Computers
  • Computing: Personally-owned Computers

Cause

  • The new password did not update to keychain

Resolution

  1. Press command+space bar on your keyboard
  2. Enter Keychain Access in the Spotlight Search bar and press the enter/return key to open Keychain Access
  3. From the list of keychains on the left side of the window, select login
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Change Password for Keychain "login"
  5. Enter your old password (the one you used before resetting your password) of your user account, and then click OK
    • If you entered the correct password, a new window will appear
  6. In the Enter a new password for the keychain "login" window, enter your old password in the Current Password field
  7. In the New Password field, enter your new (current) password
  8. Re-enter your new (current) password in the Verify field
  9. Click OK
