Introduction

Miami University provides a secure and reliable wired (Ethernet) Internet connection across all campus buildings. This service ensures that faculty, staff, students, and guests have consistent access to the university's network and the broader Internet, supporting academic, administrative, and personal activities. For some use cases, ,using a wired Internet connection is superior to a Wi-Fi connection.

  • Secure Internet Access: Provides a stable and encrypted connection to Miami's network and the internet
  • Campus-Wide Availability: Accessible throughout all buildings on all campuses via network jacks
  • High-Speed Connectivity: Supports various Ethernet speeds, including 10base-T, 100base-T, and 1000base-T
  • Power Over Ethernet: Many live jacks may also provide power to the connected device, especially Cisco Phones, eliminating the need for separate power adapters.
  • Specialized Access: Offers tailored connectivity for departmental servers and high-speed applications
  • Network Consultation: IT Services Network Engineering group provides consulting network installation and applications, such as computer lab setups, internet bandwidth requirements, building renovations, and departmental network upgrades

Constraints 

  • Scope: Available in all campus buildings across all campuses. Supports devices with RJ-45 Ethernet ports
  • Not all data jacks are live: just because you see a data port on a wall does not mean that port is live. 

Eligibility and Audience

  • Students: Eligible for standard connectivity as part of student fees
  • Faculty and Staff: Eligible for standard connectivity provided by the university
  • University Guests: Eligible for guest access to the wired Internet service
  • Departments: Eligible to request specialized network configurations or installations 

Getting Started and Support 

  • Accessing the wired Internet: Plug the device into a live network jack using an Ethernet cable.
  • Remove network block: Suspicious websites may be automatically blocked by networking protection services. Use this form to request a specific site be unlocked.
  • Activate or Move a data port: Complete this request form to have an existing data port activated
  • Installation of new data port(s): Complete this request form to have a quote to have new cabling run to the desired location
  • Report a damaged port: use this form to report damage to an existing data outlet box or port.
  • Static IP Address: If there is reason to have the device connected to a wired port maintain a static address, such as a printer, you may request the current IP address be made static for that device using this web application (access restricted to authorized individuals)
