Policy Rationale
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records by setting forth strict limitations governing the release of information about students. Although FERPA contains exceptions for the release of directory information without a student's prior written consent, students have the right to request that even such directory information not be disclosed.
In very general terms, FERPA gives students the rights to control the disclosure of their education records to others; to inspect and review their own education records; and to challenge the content of their education records.

Miami University's Help Desk staff is prohibited from releasing information about contact with a student or the contents of any work log to anyone other than the student served. If a parent calls for information about a student's ticket, we cannot provide specifics of the ticket, under most circumstances. If a parent (or any other person who is not the contact listed on a ticket) requests information about a student ticket, we can only explain that we are unable to provide any information about student records. We will be helpful and offer as much general information not related to the specifics of the ticket as we are able to give.
