Quiz auto-submitted despite extended due date / Canvas

Problem

  • I extended the due date for a Canvas quiz. Why did some students' quizzes automatically submit on the original due date?

Resolution

  • Changes made to a quiz in Canvas do not affect in-progress attempts. If a student started a quiz before you updated the due date, their attempt could be marked as late. If you have a Late Submission policy in the Gradebook that is affecting the student's grade, you can remove the late penalty for each student by changing the submission status (back to None):
  • When an availability date is set for a quiz that designates the date the assignment will no longer accept submissions (i.e., the "available until" date), quizzes will auto-submit on that date, regardless of how much time remains on the quiz timer. If you adjust this date after a student has started the quiz and it auto-submits on the original date, you may need to give the student another attempt using the Moderate function (if only one is allowed in the quiz settings). The Moderate function is accessed differently based on the quiz version you're using:
  • If you need to extend quiz dates for only a specific student or group of students, refer to the KB guide to open a quiz or assignment for a student
