Configure AppPortal apps in Windows

Issue/Question

  • How do I configure and launch AppPortal apps in Windows?
  • How do I install RemoteApp and Desktop Connections on my PC?

Environment

  • AppPortal Applications
    • Banner
    • Blackboard
    • CEC-ChemCad
    • CSE 148 Desktop
    • EHS-SPSS
    • Kronos
    • Milestone
    • MInE (remove from list 07.31.2019)
    • MyMicros/EMS
    • Office - UIT
    • PFD
    • POL-Stata
    • STA-SAS
    • Titanium
    • TSR Utilities
    • ULB - SAS/STATA/ARES
    • WebFocus
  • AppPortal (Miami Resources RemoteApp and Desktop Connections)
  • Windows 7 and newer

Rationale

  • Miami's AppPortal technology streams applications to your computer or device, making the application appear as if it is running from your computer or device

Resolution

Configure AppPortal

  1. Click Start
  2. Start typing RemoteApp and Desktop Connections
  3. Select RemoteApp and Desktop Connections from the search results
  4. Click either Access RemoteApp and Desktop Connection
    • OR Set up a new connection with RemoteApp and Desktop Connection
  5. In the Email address or connection URL text box, enter https://AppPortal.MiamiOH.edu/RDWeb/feed/webfeed.aspx
  6. Click Next
  7. Click Next again to continue
  8. When prompted, enter your Miami credentials as follows:
    1. Enter IT\<your Miami UniqueID>
    2. Enter your MUnet password
  9. Click OK
  10. In the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection summary box, click Finish

Launch an AppPortal application

  • AppPortal applications are on your Windows Start menu
  1. Click Start
  2. Click All Programs
  3. Click Miami Resources
  4. Click the application you want to run
    • You may receive a "trust" warning. It is safe to continue with the connection. You can also select the check box Don't ask me again for remote connections from this publisher

In Windows 10

  1. Click Start
  2. Locate and click the Miami Resources folder
  3. Click the application you want to run

Notes
  • Administrative application access: Access to some applications (e.g., course enrollment, membership in departmental groups) requires authorization. The following list implies the parameters that provide network access, but not necessarily authorization to use the applications:
    • Native Banner: Available only on wired professional networks or through AdminVPN with special access
    • MInE: Available only on wired professional networks or through AdminVPN with special access  (remove content 07.31.2019)
    • Kronos: Available only on wired professional networks
  • Windows 7: You must enable the TLS 1.2 encryption protocol before you will be able to connect to AppPortal resources. TLS 1.2 was added to the Windows 7 operating system via Windows updates so ensure your computer is patched. In addition to requiring this update to be installed, it must be enabled. Download a script to enable TLS 1.2 . Extract the zip file and run the Enable TLS 1.2 on Windows 7.bat script as an administrator.

Can you resolve this issue yourself?
Can the end-user resolve the issue using the instructions given?
Or does the end-user need to request assistance from Miami UIT, a client office, or a vendor?
Yes! This is self-service with a smile.
