Forward my Miami Gmail to another email address

Issue/Question

  • I'm an alumni of Miami University, and I am trying to transfer my mail and contacts to a new generic Gmail account. It's asking for a POP username and server so I can finish the transfer process.

Environment

  • Gmail

Resolution

  1. Log in to your email account
  2. Click the gear icon in the upper-right, then select Settings
  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  4. Click Add a forwarding address
  5. Enter the address of the account to which you want to forward email a,nd click Next
  6. In the confirmation message box, click Proceed
  7. Enter the confirmation code
    • Your code will be delivered to the forwarding address email
  8. Next to the heading Forwarding, ensure that Forward a copy of incoming mail to is selected
    • To remove email forwarding, simply return to this same setting screen and click the Disable Forwarding option
  9. Choose what to do with mail delivered to your Miami inbox. You may:
    • Keep a copy in the Inbox — keep unread copies of all messages in the inbox
    • Mark the copy as Read — keeps messages in the inbox and marks them as read.
    • Archive the copy — removed messages from the inbox, but keep them viewable from the All Mail folder
    • Delete the copy — permanently delete all messages once they have been forwarded to your other email address
  10. Click Save Changes

Note to Students

  • Miami strongly recommends that you not forward your email to another account while you are a Miami student. Miami uses email as a method of transmitting official University communications and relies on students to check email regularly (follow this link to review the student email policy in the Student Handbook). By forwarding your email, you run the risk of blocked attachments, full mailboxes, and potential exposure of confidential data
