Duo / Unable to scan QR code when enrolling my smart device

Objective

  • To provide instruction on how to enroll a smart device without scanning a QR code when you:
    • Cannot scan QR code when enrolling smartphone
    • Cannot scan QR code when enrolling tablet
    • Do not want to allow Duo Mobile app to take pictures and record video

Environment

  • 312306: Duo Security Two-factor Authentication
  • Duo Mobile App
    • Android, iPhone, or Windows smartphone
    • Android or iOS tablet

Rationale

  • When enrolling your smart device for use with Duo Security, you can choose to activate enrollment through an email activation link

Procedure

  • Before attempting initial enrollment again, be sure that the Duo Mobile app is installed on the smartphone you want to enroll
  1. Open a supported browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer 8 (or later), or Opera
  2. Log in to any Miami University system using your UniqueID and MUnet password
    • Unenrolled users will be prompted to enroll in Duo
  3. Click the Start setup button
  4. Select Mobile phone as the type of device you want to add
  5. Click the Continue button
  6. Enter the area code and phone number of the smartphone you want to enroll
    • A check-mark indicates that you have entered the number in the correct format
  7. Check the box to confirm that you have entered the correct phone number
  8. Click the Continue button
  9. Select the type of smartphone you want to enroll: iPhone, Android, or Windows
  10. Confirm that the Duo Mobile app is installed on your smartphone and click the I have Duo Mobile Installed button
  11. Select the option: Or have an activation link emailed to you instead
  12. Enter your email address into the box
  13. Click Send email
  14. Open the email on the smart device you want to enroll and click the link in the email to complete self-enrollment
    • The email must be opened on the device with Duo Mobile installed — if the email is opened on the computer or on another device, it will not work
    • The enrollment link expires after 30 days — if you do not complete your enrollment during this 30-day window, you will have to attempt enrollment again
  15. Click Continue
