File Storage / Connect to network file storage in macOS

Objective

  • To provide instruction on connecting to and mapping a network drive in macOS when:
    • You want to connect to network file storage from a macOS computer
    • You want to access network file storage on MyFiles or MUFiles

Environment

  • File Storage & Sharing

    • 10411: MUFiles
    • 10299: MyFiles

Resolution

Use the NoMAD Utility

Faculty or staff using a University computer managed by Jamf Pro

  1. Press Command ⌘+space-bar to open Spotlight Search, and enter Self Service in the search field
    • Or double-click your hard drive icon, open the Applications folder and scroll to locate the Self Service app
  2. Double-click Self Service to open the app
  3. In the upper-left corner, enter nomad in the search field
  4. In the results, locate NoMAD and click the Install button
  5. When installation is complete, return to Spotlight Search and enter NoMAD in the search field
    • Or return to the Applications folder and scroll to locate the NoMAD app
  6. Double-click NoMAD to open the app
  7. Click the triangular icon in your status bar in the upper-right side of your screen
  8. From the drop-down, select Sign In and log in using your UniqueID and MUnet password
  9. When a check mark  appears in the icon, click the icon again and select Map Drives
  10. Click the icon again and hover your cursor over the File Servers item
  11. From the fly-out menu, select the location to which you want to connect

 

Faculty, staff, or student using a personally owned computer

  1. Download the NoMAD package
  2. Double-click to open the package and run the installer
  3. Click the triangular icon in your status bar in the upper-right side of your screen
  4. When a check mark  appears in the icon, click the icon again and select Map Drives
  5. Click the icon again and hover your cursor over the File Servers item
  6. From the fly-out menu, select the location to which you want to connect

 

Manually map the drives

  1. To access your Finder menu, click once on your desktop or click the Finder icon (two-face cube) in your Dock
  2. From the Finder menu bar, click the Go tab and select Connect to Server
  3. To connect to departmental file space, enter smb://it.muohio.edu/files/MUFiles
  4. To connect to personal file space, enter smb://it.muohio.edu/files/MyFiles/M, replacing the letter M with the first letter of your UniqueID 
  5. At the login window, enter your Miami UniqueID and MUnet password in the appropriate fields and click Connect
    • Your network drives will appear in your Finder window

 

Notes

  • To access network drives from a residence hall or an off-campus location, you must first connect to the Miami network through VPN
  • To use NoMAD, look for the triangle icon in your menu bar
    • The icon will contain a check mark  if you have active Kerberos tickets
  • Network file storage is available to faculty, staff, and students on myFiles 
  • Faculty and staff may also have departmental network file storage on MUFiles
