Duo / Guide: Choose an authentication method (START HERE!)

Purpose

• To provide guidance in choosing the Duo Security authentication method that's right for you

User

• All current Miami University Students, Faculty, and Staff, plus Alumni, Retirees, and Emeriti are required to enroll in Duo

Environment

• 312306: Duo Security two-factor authentication
• Duo Mobile App
  • Android, iPhone, or Windows smartphone
  • Android or iOS tablet
• Mobile Phone (cell phone other than a smartphone)
• YubiKey 4 Series Security Key
  • YubiKey hardware token
  • U2F hardware device
  • U2F authenticator
  • U2F security token
• DIGIPASS GO 6 (OneSpan) authenticator hardware
• Feitian OTP hardware token

Guidelines

On a smartphone with Duo Mobile

• Duo Security and MUIT recommend the use of a smartphone and the Duo Mobile app for the best experience in two-factor authentication
  • Follow these KB instructions to enroll a smartphone for use with Duo 
• Duo works with smartphones and the Duo Mobile app by supporting these authentication methods:
  • Duo Push (recommended)
    • You will receive a push notification for authentication — simply tap Approve in the app to approve the login request
  • Duo Passcode
    • You will receive a passcode that is generated through Duo Mobile on your device

On a tablet with Duo Mobile

• Follow these KB instructions to enroll a tablet for use with Duo
• Duo works with Android and iOS tablets and the Duo Mobile app by supporting these authentication methods:
  • Duo Push (recommended)
    • You will receive a push notification for authentication — simply tap Approve in the app to approve the login request
  • Duo Passcode
    • You will receive a passcode that is generated through Duo Mobile on your device

On a mobile phone (cell phone other than a smartphone)

• Follow these KB instructions to enroll a mobile phone for use with Duo
• Duo works with any mobile phone — a cell phone other than a smartphone or a smartphone without the Duo Mobile app — by supporting these authentication methods:
  • SMS text message (if your mobile phone can receive SMS text messages)
    • You will receive a text message from containing a six-digit passcode
    • Click the Enter a Passcode button, type in the passcode you received from Duo via text message, and click Log In

• It will be important to remember that if you replace your mobile phone you will need to use the original enrolled phone to authenticate into your Duo settings to unenroll the older device and then enroll the new phone.

On a YubiKey hardware device

• MUIT recommends and supports the use of a YubiKey hardware device for U2F or OTP authentication with Duo
• Duo Security and MUIT recommend the use of a YubiKey hardware device to support two-factor authentication when you anticipate unreliable Internet access or phone service
• Follow these KB instructions to enroll a YubiKey hardware device for use with Duo
  • Here's a handy guide to help you buy the right YubiKey for your device
• Duo works with YubiKey device by supporting this authentication method:
  • One-tap convenience
    • With the YubiKey inserted into the USB port of your authentication device, log in using your Miami credentials
    • When prompted for your second-factor authentication, simply tap your YubiKey to send a signed response to Duo to validate your request and automatically complete your login

On a Feitian hardware token

• MUIT recommends and supports the use of a Feitian hardware tokens for OTP authentication with Duo
• Duo Security and MUIT recommend the use of a Feitian hardware tokens to support two-factor authentication when you anticipate unreliable Internet access or phone service
• Follow these KB instructions to enroll a Feitian hardware token for use with Duo
  • Here's a handy guide to help you buy the right Feitian token for your device
• Duo works with Feitian tokens by supporting this authentication method:
  • OTP (One Time Password/Passcode)
    • When prompted for your second-factor authentication, simply press the button on your Feitian token to display the current OTP passcode and enter the digits into the passcode field of the Duo iFrame
