Wired Network / Ethernet connection issues in my room

Objective

  • To provide information on troubleshooting the wired connection in your dorm room
    • When the Internet seems to be down and hasn’t been working for an extended period
    • When your Ethernet connection to the Internet is intermittent 
    • When the Ethernet jacks on the guest room access point in seemed to have stopped working

Environment

  • 9583: Access Network
    • Wired Network
  • Personally Owned Computer
  • Miami University Residence Halls

Resolution

  1. Disable your computer’s Wi-Fi to confirm that you're using a wired connection
    • On macOS, click the Wi-Fi icon and select Turn Wi-Fi Off
    • On Windows:
      1. Right-click on the wireless icon in the lower-right corner
      2. Click on Open Network and Sharing Center
      3. Click on Change Adapter Settings
      4. Right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter and select Disable
  2. Plug your laptop or computer into the LAN port on the residence hall room access point
    • Are you able to connect?
  3. Use a different Ethernet cable

    • Your location, including building name and room number
    • Your computer's MAC address
    • IP address of device 
    • Does your roommate experience the same issue?
