macOS / Reset keychain password

Objective

  • Reset the keychain password
  • Enter the keychain password in Keychain Access
  • Update the password in Keychain Access

Scope

  • Your new password did not update to keychain

Environment

Resolution

  1. Press command+space bar on your keyboard
  2. Enter Keychain Access in the Spotlight Search bar and press the enter/return key to open Keychain Access
  3. From the list of keychains on the left side of the window, select login
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Change Password for Keychain "login"
  5. Enter your old password (the one you used to log into your Mac before resetting your password) of your user account, and then click OK
    • If you entered the correct password, a new window will appear
  6. In the Enter a new password for the keychain "login" window, enter your old password in the Current Password field
  7. In the New Password field, enter your new (current) password
  8. Re-enter your new (current) password in the Verify field
  9. Click OK
