Canvas / Add MatLab to a course

Objective

  • To provide instructions on adding MATLAB assignments and links through LMS integration into Canvas

User

  • Canvas Instructor

Environment

  • 10185: Canvas

Instructions

  1. Log in to MATLAB and set up your course and assignments
  2. Enroll students through their Miami email on MATLAB Grader
    • Each student will need to open, read, and agree to the acknowledgements before they can access MATLAB content
  3. Navigate to Canvas
    • MATLAB is added to the Miami University Canvas instance through Assignments > External Tools (for Grade Passback) and URL hyperlinks
    • MATLAB cannot and should not be added as an app or to Course Navigation in Course Settings
  4. Create an assignment using your preferred method
    • Connecting MATLAB to Canvas through Assignments will set up Grade Passback
    • This allows students to take coursework in MATLAB and have their grade automatically added to the Canvas Gradebook for the course
  5. To connect the assignment with MATLAB, select Submission Type: External Tool
  6. Select Find and look for MATLAB Coding Problem, select it, and then select Save
    • If you do not select Save and navigate away, the assignment will not be set to a specific external tool
  7. Add the rest of the details of the assignment and select Save when done
  8. When the page refreshes, a blue button will appear labeled: Open in new tab
  9. Select this link to log in to MATLAB and add your pre-created assignments to Canvas
  10. Note: To add MATLAB content as a URL hyperlink, you can add URLs to Modules directly in Canvas or add URLs in the Canvas Rich Content Editor

Notes

  • MATLAB is only for the use of the following departments: CEC, ECE, ENT, MME, and PHY
  • MATLAB is only available in the Oxford sub-account in Canvas
