Mount encrypted container / VeraCrypt

Problem

  • How do I mount a VeraCrypt encrypted container from a flash drive?

Scope

  • Portable media used to store patient data in the Psychology Department Clinic must be encrypted
  • Encryption for Personal Protected Identifying Information (PII) covered by FERPA and HIPAA collected in the Psychology Clinic

Resolution

  1. Launch VeraCrypt software and select free drive letter (PC) or Slot 1 (macOS)

  2. Choose Select File and navigate to and select encrypted file on flash drive

  3. Choose Mount and enter password

  4. File will mount via macOS Finder or Windows File Manager, depending on operating system

  5. Choose Dismount All and Exit when finished

Notes

  • Software downloaded from VeraCrypt
  • macOS must also download and install OSXFUSE to mount encrypted volumes via Finder
