Objective

  • To provide instruction on setting up BitWarden, on either desktop or mobile devices

User

Environment

  • (no asset record): BitWarden

Procedure

Create an account

  1. Go to BitWarden's website
  2. Click on Get Started
  3. Fill out the registration form

 

Download BitWarden on your desktop, browser, and mobile phone

  1. Go to the BitWarden's website
  2. Click on Download
  3. After that, you may select your device to install the desktop application, or select your browser to download the browser extension
  4. For mobile phones:
    • IOS devices
      • Go to the App Store and download the BitWarden app
    • Android Devices
      • Go to the Google Play Store and download the BitWarden app

 

Save passwords on BitWarden

  1. Log in to your BitWarden account
  2. Click on Add Item
  3. There are four types of credentials that you can save
    • Login
      • Here you can save usernames and passwords
    • Card
      • Here you can save bank card information
    • Identity
      • Here you can save personal information
    • Secure notes
      • Here you can save any notes that you want to keep secure

 

Transfer Chrome browser saved usernames and passwords to BitWarden

  1. In the Chrome browser, go to Chrome Settings
  2. Go to Autofill and then to Passwords
    • To avoid redundancy:
      1. Turn off offer to save passwords
      2. Turn off Auto sign-in
  3. Click on the three vertical dots by Saved Passwords and select Export
    • A .csv file will be downloaded
  4. Go to your BitWarden account
  5. Go to Tools and select import Data
  6. Select Chrome (CSV) from the drop-down menu
  7. Select Choose File and select the CSV file downloaded earlier

Note: BitWarden has documentation for importing passwords from other sources

 

Enable BitWarden to AutoFill on IOS devices

  1. Go to your iPhone settings
  2. Go to Passwords, or search for it with the search bar
  3. Go to AutoFill Passwords
  4. Enable BitWarden to be used as an autofill option
  5. Turn off iCloud keychain, if you don't want to use it going forward
    • Currently, Apple does not provide an official way to export data from iCloud, Mac Keychain, or Safari. So you can't import credentials from iCloud/Mac Keychain; you have to add them manually
