Canvas / Add a Google LTI 1.3 assignment

Objective

  • To provide instruction on adding a Google Drive assignment to a Canvas course

Scope

  • Google Drive will be removed from the left navigation bar by Summer 2024. Use Assignments and External Tool to replace this app

User

  • Canvas Instructor

Environment

  • 10185: Canvas
  • 11357: Google Workspace for Education
    • Google LTI

Resolution

  1. Create the assignment folder in Google Drive and place the file(s) in a folder that you can easily find
    • Add all relevant documents and files the student will need to complete the assignment
  2. Set up an assignment in Canvas with the appropriate points. Make sure the points match as you set up the Google link below
  3. Set the Submission type to External Tool
  4. Click the Find button and a list of integration tools will appear. Scroll down the list until you find Google Assignments (LTI 1.3) and click on that item
  5. Verify the Google account that you want associated with this application — your account should populate automatically if you are signed in and not timed out
  6. Click on Continue or Link
    • Note: Buttons may be different, depending on the browser you are using
  7. Create the Google Assignment and attach the file that your students will edit
  8. Submit by clicking on the Attach button
  9. Locate the file you want to share with the students — each student will have a copy of the file(s) to submit.
    • Note: You can attach files from My Drive. It is recommended that you have the files you want to share in a specific folder on your drive
  10. Continue to click Attach to add additional files
  11. When you have added all the files, click the Create button to save your selections. You can also add a rubric and set the due date for the assignment
  12. Return to the Configure External Tool screen
  13. Click the Select button
