Canvas / Allow a student to take the final exam in a closed course

Objective

  • To provide instruction on extending a closed course to allow a student extra time to take the final exam

User

  • Canvas Instructor

Environment

  • 10185: Canvas

Cause

  • Canvas course sites automatically close at the end of each term. You must extend the end-date of the course and the section to allow a student to take an exam

Resolution

  1. If the course is closed (it is after the last day of the term), it will need to be reopened by a Canvas Admin. Please follow these steps:
    • Please send an email request to miamionline@miamioh.edu or submit a TDX ticket to Miami Online to request the course be reopened by a Canvas Admin
    • Please provide:
      • the course
      • section
      • term
      • name of the student(s) requiring an extension
      • last date student users should have access to the course
    • Once reopened, a Canvas Admin will update you and the exam will need to be re-assigned to the students
    • Please re-assign the exam and if needed, Moderate the Quiz to allow extra attempts
  2. If the course is open (before the last day of the term), follow the steps in these Canvas Guide articles:
  3. Your student can now complete their work, and you can adjust grades
  4. When finished, be sure to set the course end-date back to the end of term
