Create an assignment / Canvas
Body
Problem
- What are the different assignment types in Canvas?
- How do I create an assignment in Canvas?
- What are the different ways students can submit assignments?
- What grading options do I have for an assignment?
Resolution
- There are five assignment types available in Canvas: Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes, External Tools, and Not Graded. An Assignment is a Canvas assignment that can be submitted online through text entry, file uploads, media recordings, external tools, URLs, or Canvas pages. Assignments appear on the Assignments Index Page, the Gradebook (graded only), the Syllabus, and on the User Dashboard (graded only):
- Assignments can be graded as a percentage, complete/incomplete, points, letter grade, GPA scale, or set as not graded. Refer to the Canvas Guide for adding or editing details in an assignment to learn more
- Assignments can be graded but not count toward the final grade as outlined in the following Canvas Guide:
- Once an assignment has been created as one type, e.g., an online text entry assignment, it cannot be changed to another assignment type, e.g., a quiz or discussion. If you want a text entry assignment to now be a quiz with an essay question (text entry), you will need to create a quiz, and then unpublish or delete the original assignment
- In the assignment details, you can add links to outside materials, add links to course files, or embed media for students to reference using the Rich Content Editor
