Objective
To provide instruction on adding a single subscriber to a LISTSERV list that you manage
To provide instruction on adding multiple subscribers to a LISTSERV list that you manage

Resolution
Add a subscriber using the web interface
This method will send a welcome message to your new LISTSERV subscriber. If you do not want to send the welcome message, select
Do not notify the user in any way
Open the LISTSERV management console
If prompted, enter your email address as your username and your LISTSERV password
Note: your LISTSERV password is not the same as your MUnet password
In the left column of the dashboard, click on the list to which you want to add a subscriber
On the Listname Home Page, click on the
List Management
drop-down menu and select
Subscriber Management
to open the
Single Subscriber
tab
Enter the person's email address and full name and click
Add to [listname]
In the
Add a new user to the list
field, enter the new subscriber's email address or full name
Click
Add to listname
to add the subscriber to the list
Add a list of subscribers using the web interface
This method will
not
send a welcome message to new LISTSERV subscribers
Create a text file with email addresses and names (optional), one per line, as shown below. You must create the text file on a Windows computer or on a Macintosh with a program that can save Windows line feeds

Open the LISTSERV management console
If prompted, enter your email address as your username and your LISTSERV password
Note: your LISTSERV password is not the same as your MUnet password
To see only the lists you own, click the
Self Only
link in the
Search Options
section of the dashboard
In the
Dashboard for UniqueID@miamioh.edu
section of your web interface, a table containing the distribution lists you manage is displayed
In the left column of your table, click the appropriate list name to open your Listname Home Page
From the toolbar at the top of your page, click the
List Management
drop-down and select
Subscribers Management
After the Subscribers Management page loads, click the
Bulk Operations
tab
Ensure the first radio button labeled
Add the imported addresses to listname; do not remove any subscribers
is selected
If you want to remove all existing subscribers and replace them with the new list, choose the second option
Click the
Browse
button and locate the text file containing your list of email addresses
Click the
Submit
button
Any errors in the file will be displayed on the next page, along with a summary of how many subscribers were added
If the next page says
ADD: no error, one recipient added and your file contained more than one subscriber
,
it is possible you sent a Macintosh-formatted file. Try the email instructions below
Add a subscriber using email
LISTSERV will send a welcome message to new subscribers, unless you add the word
quiet
before the command:
quiet
add <listname> <emailaddress> <fullname>
Open your email application and create a new
plain-text
email message
Make sure the
FROM
address reflects the email address on which you are listed as an owner of the desired LISTSERV list
In the
TO
field, enter
listserv@listserv.miamioh.edu
In the main message body, type
add <listname> <emailaddress> <fullname>
<listname>: the 32-character or less name (the part of the list address before @listserv.miamioh.edu)
<emailaddress>: the email address of the person you are subscribing to the list
<fullname>: the first, middle (optional), and last name of the person you are subscribing to the list
Send the email
Add a list of subscribers using email
This method will send a welcome message to new LISTSERV subscribers. If you do not want to send the welcome message, add the word
quiet
before the add command
Open your email application and create a new
plain-text
message
The
From
address is your list owner email address.
In the
To
field, enter
listserv@listserv.miamioh.edu
In the main message body, enter:
ADD listname DD=MYDD1 IMPORT
//MYDD1 DD *
emailaddress fullname
emailaddress fullname
emailaddress fullname
/*
listname
is the 32-character-or-less name of the list — the part of the list address before
@listserv.miamioh.edu
emailaddress
is the email address of the person you are adding to the list
fullname
is the first, middle, and last name of the person you are adding to the list
Note
After several minutes — depending on the number of subscribers you are adding — you will receive a summary response from LISTSERV. If you receive errors, verify that the first, second, and last lines in your email message appear exactly as shown below, with the exception of replacing
listname
with the name of the list you are managing
