Add a subscriber using the web interface

  1. Open the LISTSERV management console
  2. If prompted, enter your email address as your username and your LISTSERV password
    • Note: your LISTSERV password is not the same as your MUnet password
  3. In the left column of the dashboard, click on the list to which you want to add a subscriber
  4. On the Listname Home Page, click on the List Management drop-down menu and select Subscriber Management to open the Single Subscriber tab
  5. Enter the person's email address and full name and click Add to [listname]
  6. In the Add a new user to the list field, enter the new subscriber's email address or full name
  7. Click Add to listname to add the subscriber to the list

Add a list of subscribers using the web interface

  • This method will not send a welcome message to new LISTSERV subscribers
  1. Create a text file with email addresses and names (optional), one per line, as shown below. You must create the text file on a Windows computer or on a Macintosh with a program that can save Windows line feeds
    • alphaaa@MiamiOH.edu Alex Alpha
    • bravobb@MiamiOH.edu Bob Bravo
    • charlicc@MiamiOH.edu Christine Charlie
  2. Open the LISTSERV management console
  3. If prompted, enter your email address as your username and your LISTSERV password
    • Note: your LISTSERV password is not the same as your MUnet password
  4. To see only the lists you own, click the Self Only link in the Search Options section of the dashboard
  5. In the Dashboard for UniqueID@miamioh.edu section of your web interface, a table containing the distribution lists you manage is displayed
  6. In the left column of your table, click the appropriate list name to open your Listname Home Page
  7. From the toolbar at the top of your page, click the List Management drop-down and select Subscribers Management
  8. After the Subscribers Management page loads, click the Bulk Operations tab
  9. Ensure the first radio button labeled Add the imported addresses to listname; do not remove any subscribers is selected
    • If you want to remove all existing subscribers and replace them with the new list, choose the second option
  10. Click the Browse button and locate the text file containing your list of email addresses
  11. Click the Submit button
    • Any errors in the file will be displayed on the next page, along with a summary of how many subscribers were added
    • If the next page says ADD: no error, one recipient added and your file contained more than one subscriber, it is possible you sent a Macintosh-formatted file. Try the email instructions below

Add a subscriber using email

  • LISTSERV will send a welcome message to new subscribers, unless you add the word quiet before the command: quiet add <listname> <emailaddress> <fullname>
  1. Open your email application and create a new plain-text email message
    • Make sure the FROM address reflects the email address on which you are listed as an owner of the desired LISTSERV list
  2. In the TO field, enter listserv@listserv.miamioh.edu
  3. In the main message body, type add <listname> <emailaddress> <fullname>
    • <listname>: the 32-character or less name (the part of the list address before @listserv.miamioh.edu)
    • <emailaddress>: the email address of the person you are subscribing to the list
    • <fullname>: the first, middle (optional), and last name of the person you are subscribing to the list
  4. Send the email

Add a list of subscribers using email

  • This method will send a welcome message to new LISTSERV subscribers. If you do not want to send the welcome message, add the word quiet before the add command
  1. Open your email application and create a new plain-text message
    • The From address is your list owner email address.
  2. In the To field, enter listserv@listserv.miamioh.edu
  3. In the main message body, enter:
    • ADD listname DD=MYDD1 IMPORT
    • //MYDD1 DD *
    • emailaddress fullname
    • emailaddress fullname
    • emailaddress fullname
    • /*
      • listname is the 32-character-or-less name of the list — the part of the list address before @listserv.miamioh.edu
      • emailaddress is the email address of the person you are adding to the list
      • fullname is the first, middle, and last name of the person you are adding to the list

Note

  • After several minutes — depending on the number of subscribers you are adding — you will receive a summary response from LISTSERV. If you receive errors, verify that the first, second, and last lines in your email message appear exactly as shown below, with the exception of replacing listname with the name of the list you are managing
