1Password / Migrate personally saved passwords from LastPass

Objective

  • To provide information on migrating personally saved passwords from LastPass to 1Password

Scope

  • IT Services has switched password managers from LastPass to 1Password. If this applies to you, you have received an email from accounts@1Password.com inviting you to join our enterprise account
  • This guide is only for importing personally saved passwords from LastPass to 1Password. This does not include enterprise shared passwords

User

  • IT Services team members
  • Various others across the University who are part of our LastPass installation

Environment

  • 1209137: 1Password
  • 201876: LastPass

Resolution

Migration from LastPass to 1Password

  1. You should have received an invitation to join 1Password from accounts@1Password.com with the subject line: Join Miami University on 1Password
  2. In the invitation, click Join now
  3. Sign in with Microsoft SSO and Duo — your Miami email and password
    • Yes, this means that your MUnet password is your “master” password now! (We prefer “main” here, but that is the terminology for now.)
    • Your account will be auto-approved by the system. It may present a message that your account needs to be approved by an administrator, but you can simply wait a few minutes and that message should go away
  4. Click Import passwords
    1. Choose LastPass
    2. Don’t download the 1Password app yet — the import won’t work from the desktop application
    3. Click Import a csv instead
    4. Click Continue
    5. Choose a vault to store your data, and then click Continue
      • Since this export will include all of your passwords in LastPass, the recommendation is to leave this selection on Private
    6. Export from LastPass to .csv
      1. Open a new window or tab and navigate to your LastPass vault
      2. Click Advanced Options in the left navigation
      3. Click Export and enter your Master Password
      4. At this point, you may need to verify with LastPass that it is, in fact, you doing the exporting
    7. Return to the 1Password window and import the .csv from LastPass
      1. Leave the box labeled Only import items in private folders checked/toggled
      2. IMPORTANT: DELETE the .csv from your machine as soon as this part of the process is complete

Note: This should carry over your folders from LastPass and organize them as “tags” in 1Password. This will include passwords that you have linked in your enterprise LastPass account from a private LastPass account. 1Password simply adds a tag to them (like the folder you have in LastPass)

Notes

  • Family Accounts: As an enterprise member, you will also have access to a free family account through 1Password. Visit the 1Password support site for information on how to get that set up
  • 1Password mobile app and browser extension: You also have access to the 1Password mobile application and Chrome browser extension, similar to LastPass
    • When you set up another "trusted device" in 1Password (e.g., another browser or the mobile application), you will need to have access to the browser or device where you first set up your account. This browser or device will be used to approve the new device
  • If you have any questions, please reach out to Jake Harrison or Elizabeth Parsons
