If you need to remove a Cascade webpage because it is no longer relevant or necessary, DO NOT DELETE THE PAGE! Instead, it must be archived and redirects must be set up in order to maintain proper records and prevent broken links.
Who Can Archive a Page?
Only users with live publishing rights can complete this process. If you only have access to test, you must work with a live publisher or contact webadmin@MiamiOH.edu for assistance with this process.
Before you Archive
Ensure that there is an _archives folder in the area where you want to place the page. Every SITE in Cascade should already have an _archives folder at the top of the files tree. If you do not see an _archives folder, contact webadmin@MiamiOH.edu. Do not create your own _archives folder.
The _archives folders that we have set up at the top of each site are specifically made to be unpublishable and are excluded from appearing in search results.
Steps to Archive
Step 1: Check for Relationships
This could apply to a single page or an entire folder.
If the page you are archiving is being linked to from other pages, update those pages accordingly to prevent "Page Not Found" errors.
-
Select Relationships from the More dropdown menu. This will give you a list of Cascade pages that are using internal links to point to your page.

-
Click into and edit each related page to remove the link or update the link to point to another relevant page. For this page, there are 2 relationships:

If you can’t update the links because they are on pages that you can’t edit, email webadmin@MiamiOH.edu for assistance.
This will only account for internal links to your page. Sites using external links to your page (i.e. sites outside of MiamiOH), can be accounted for by creating redirects (the last step of this process).
Step 2: Unpublish the Page or Folder
- Select Unpublish from the More dropdown menu.

- On the Unpublish page, choose the Destination where the page needs to be unpublished and then select Unpublish

Note: You can only unpublish to destinations you have access to. If you only have test publish access, you must contact webadmin@MiamiOH.edu for assistance
Step 3: Move the Page or Folder to the “_archives” Folder
Before moving the page. Please make note of the page’s current URL. You will need it later to request redirects.
- Move from the More drop down menu.

- Choose the folder where the page is currently saved.<

- A window will appear—select the _archives folder as the new location.

- Move

Final Step: Request a Redirect
To prevent "Page Not Found" errors, it's essential to set up a redirect. A website redirect automatically sends visitors from one web page to another, much like setting up a "forwarding address" to direct traffic where it needs to go. By setting up a redirect, you ensure a better user experience, automatically guiding visitors to the relevant new page.
