Purpose and Scope
To formalize a policy regarding procedures to ensure the safe handling, charging, and storing of lithium-ion batteries used in autonomous equipment to minimize the risk of fire and other hazards. This policy applies to all personnel responsible for the use, maintenance, and storage of cleaning robots and autonomous equipment powered by lithium-ion batteries. Proper handling, storage, and charging practices with lithium-ion batteries helps to limit the potential for a fire and other hazards, ensuring the safety of personnel and property.
Policy
1. Purchase and use devices that are listed by a qualified, nationally-recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
2. Use the manufacturer's cord and power adapter (charger) made specifically for the device.
3. Plug directly into the wall outlet; do not use extension cords or power strips.
4. Follow the battery manufacturer's instructions for charging and storage.
5. Keep at least 36 inches of clearance to combustibles in the area around battery charging and storage.
6. Restrict charging for business use only.
7. Keep batteries and devices at room temperature. Do not charge below 32°F or above 105°F.
8. Prior to charging, visually inspect the battery for any swelling, burn marks or abnormalities.
9. Do not dispose of damaged or overheating batteries in regular trash or recycling bins. Remove them from the building immediately and contact the Environmental Health and Safety Office to determine an appropriate disposal location and procedure.
Procedures
- All personnel must adhere to this policy and report any damaged or overheating batteries immediately.
- Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that all personnel under their supervision are trained on the proper handling, charging, and storing procedures outlined in this policy.
A battery that is swollen, corroded, leaking, showing burn marks, or that has been partially submerged in water is considered damaged and hazardous. Devices with damaged batteries often show swelling, corrosion, or other physical damage in the area where the battery is located. Discontinue use of any damaged battery or equipment and report it immediately.
