SOP #765: Residual Paint & Chemical Cleanup

Purpose and Scope

Work areas and shops within PFD periodically use paints, pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, and other chemicals during their work activities.  The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to ensure that the cleanup of containers/equipment used in these work activities is protective of the environment by preventing wastewater discharges from entering the storm water system.

Policy

All cleanup activities associated with residual paint and other chemicals will occur in an area where the wash water is drained directly to the sanitary sewer.

Procedures

All containers/equipment being cleaned will occur in the maintenance bay garage area of Cole Service Building.

Employees shall:

•     To the extent possible, empty any excess paint/chemicals from containers/equipment to be cleaned and place the contents back into the manufacturer’s original container or into a waste container if the material is no longer usable.

•     Ensure that all waste water associated with the cleaning is disposed down the sanitary drain located in Cole Service Building, room 185 - maintenance bay.

•     Never allow the discharge associated with the cleanup of paint/chemicals to drain into the stormwater system.

Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of each supervisor to ensure their employees are trained on this SOP.
