Purpose and Scope
In the interest of health and safety for Miami University students, faculty and staff, it is necessary to formalize a wild animal control policy. With significant increases in wild animal populations and the threat of rabies and other related health and safety issues, it may be necessary at times to initiate control measures. Control measures are especially critical in the case of sick or injured wild animals.
Policy
All control measures regarding nuisance wild animal trappings will be accomplished according to the laws of the State of Ohio and the recommendations of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. All control measures will be performed by a wild animal control specialist designated by Miami University and by the Division of Wildlife.
To ensure humane treatment, a veterinarian will be on retainer to advise, help rehabilitate or dispatch any trapped, wild quadruped (i.e. animal with four feet).
Procedure
Prior to any lawful trappings of wild quadrupeds, the designated control specialist must complete the application and obtain a nuisance wild animal trapping permit from the chief (or authorized representative), of the Division of Wildlife, and comply with all provisions of State of Ohio Wildlife Order 1501:31-15-03, copy available in the Pest/Animal Control Specialist’s office.
All requests regarding nuisance wild animals should be directed to the PFD Operations Center (service desk), telephone 529-6111, during normal working hours; and to the Miami University Police Department, telephone 529-2222, after normal working hours or on weekends.
