LISTSERV / Remove subscriber(s) from a list

Body

Objective

  • To provide instruction on removing a single subscriber to a LISTSERV list that you manage via the web or email
  • To provide instruction on removing multiple subscribers to a LISTSERV list that I manage via the web or email

Environment

  • 10283: LISTSERV

Resolution

Remove a single subscriber via the web interface

  1. To access your list, go to Miami's LISTSERV web site
  2. If prompted, log in to the list using the email address with which you are subscribed and your LISTSERV password
  3. When the List Management dashboard appears, click on the list to select the list you need to remove the subscriber from
  4. From the left-hand menu, click on Subscriber Reports
  5. Select the subscriber(s) you want to delete by clicking the box next to the subscribers entry
    • You can delete more than one subscriber by check marking all subscribers to delete
  6. Click the Delete Subscribers button
  7. Confirm the action by clicking the Delete button

Remove a single subscriber via email

  1. Open your email application and create a new plain-text email message
  2. Make sure the From: address reflects the email address on which you are listed as an owner of the desired list
  3. In the To: field, enter listserv@listserv.miamioh.edu
  4. In the main message body, enter delete listname emailaddress
    • listname is the 32-character or less name (the part of the list address before @listserv.MiamiOH.edu)
    • emailaddress is the email address of the person you are removing from the list
    • To delete multiple subscribers, construct a delete listname emailaddress line for each subscriber
  5. LISTSERV will send a notification to users who are removed from a list
    • If you want to suppress the notification, enter the word quiet (without quotes) before the one-line delete command shown above
      • It should read quiet delete listname emailaddress
  6. Send the message

Notes

  • LISTSERV will send a notification to users who are removed from a list. If you wish to suppress the notification, add the word quiet before the delete command shown above
    • The first line of your email message should then read QUIET DELETE listname DD=MYDD1
  • Send the message. In a few minutes, you will receive a summary response from LISTSERV. If you receive errors, verify that the first, second, and last lines in your email message appear exactly as shown above, with the exception of replacing listname with the name of the list you are managing
