Canvas / Modify a closed course

Objective

• To provide instruction on making modifications to a closed Canvas course when:
  • You want to share content from a previous course with another instructor
  • You need to open a closed course for a student to submit coursework
  • You need to enter grades after the end of the term
  • A department chair or assessment coordinator needs access to a previous course

Environment

Cause

• Canvas term, course, and section end dates control course access. FERPA guidelines should be followed when adding users to sites with student data

Resolution

1. If the goal is to share content from a previous course with another instructor, then request a new course site to adhere to FERPA guidelines
2. If a student needs access to complete coursework, follow the steps to request to open a closed course for a student 
3. If you need to add or modify grades in a course, submit a Canvas Solutions Request
   • Include the term, course name, course section, and the date access can end
4. If a department chair or assessment coordinator needs to access a previous course as part of their academic responsibilities, submit a Canvas Solutions Request:
   • Include the user's name, email, and reason for access
   • Once added, the user will find the course on their Canvas All Courses page
