Problem

• How do I combine multiple sections of one course in Canvas?
• How do I cross-list multiple sections into one course site in Canvas?

Resolution

• Note: Do not cross-list courses after the term has begun, or student work will be lost. If your course should be cross-listed at the course level, refer to the KB article regarding Registrar cross-listed courses.
• More information can be found in the Canvas Guide for cross-listing courses. You must be in the Teacher role in all selected courses to complete cross-listing yourself

1. Determine your primary course
   • For example, if you have a section A and a section B, select one to be the primary course
   • If either course has content created, always select that course to be the primary course, or the content will be lost
2. Open your selected primary course
3. In the address bar, copy the course code by clicking on the number at the end of the Canvas course URL:
   • Example: https://miamioh.instructure.com/courses/123456
4. Copy this number
5. Close the primary course
6. Open the course you wish to cross-list into your primary course
7. Select Settings from the left-hand course navigation
8. Click on the Sections tab
9. Find the section hyperlink (underlined course name and section with user number and SIS ID listed after it ) and click it
10. On the right side of the screen, you will see the option to Cross-List this Section
11. Select this button
12. Paste the course ID from Step 4 into the second text field and press Enter
13. Wait until the full course name appears in the bottom-left corner of the message box under Selected Course, and click the Cross-List this Section button
    • If the course information does not appear, ensure that there are no additional spaces, tabs, or characters before or after the Course ID code
14. Repeat steps 6–14 with all needed sections using the same Course ID number​​​​​​, or repeat the entire process to cross-list different courses
15. If you have any issues cross-listing courses, submit a Canvas Solutions Request

Notes

• The course name for cross-listed courses should be automatically updated by an IT process. It may take 24 hours for the update to take effect
