Obtain Kurzweil 3000


Kurzweil 3000 is an assistive technology, text to speech, learning tool that supports the concept of Universal Design for Learning with a suite of powerful reading, writing, test-taking, and study skill tools that makes curriculum accessible to all students.

Miami's licensing agreement allows Kurzweil 3000 to be installed for free on both personal and university-owned computers. Versions are available for both Macintosh and Windows computers


To obtain a copy of Kurzweil 3000, log in to the Software Store with your UniqueID and Miami password. Choose the Kurzweil brand and follow instructions for your computer platform.

After you have completed the Software Store transaction, you will receive an email with instructions on how to download and activate your software.

1. Click the link in your email to download Kurzweil.
2. Save the download file to your desktop or another convenient location. The file is over 1 GB in size, so it may take a few minutes to download.

Mac Users

  1. Place the download file in your Applications folder.
  2. Click the file to install the software.

Windows Users

Windows users must install the software as an administrator (Run as administrator). If you do not do this step correctly, the software will not install.

  1. Right-click on the file and select Run as administrator. If you do not do this step, the software will not install correctly
  2. Allow plenty of time. Installation may take up to 20 minutes.

To activate and use the software you must email to request an account.

Student Disability Services will email a username and password to be used for your Kurzweil login. Also included in the email will be information on getting started with Kurzweil.
