Disable or remove browser extensions

Issue/Question

  • I want to disable or remove a browser extension (plug-in)

Environment

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Internet Explorer
  • Safari
  • macOS
  • Windows
  • University-owned Computer
  • Personally-owned Computer

Cause

  • Extensions (plug-ins) are small programs that extend the functionality of a web browser. Many prevent the storage of browser cookies and ask you to confirm or "trust" a site before continuing, which can affect performance of web apps

Resolution

Chrome

  1. In Chrome, click the More icon (three vertical dots in the upper right corner)
  2. Select More tools from the menu
  3. Select Extensions from the menu
  4. In the Extensions tab, locate the extension you want to disable or remove
    • To disable the extension, clear the Enabled checkbox 
    • To remove the extension, click the trashcan icon
  5. Close and restart your browser

Firefox

  1. In Firefox, select the menu icon (three horizontal lines in the upper right corner)
  2. Select Add-ons from the menu
  3. Click Extensions on the left menu
  4. Locate the extension you want to disable or remove
  5. To the right of the extension, select the Disable or the Remove button
  6. Close and restart your browser

Internet Explorer 

  1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools (gear) button
  2. Select Manage Add-ons
  3. In the Manage Add-ons window, locate the extension you want to disable or remove
  4. Select the extension and click the Disable button in the bottom-right corner
  5. Click the Close button

Safari (macOS High Sierra)

  1. In Safari, select Safari in the menu bar
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select the Extensions tab
  4. Locate the extension you want to disable or remove
    • To disable the extension, clear the checkbox for the extension
    • To remove the extension, click the Uninstall button for the extension
  5. Close and restart your browser
