Canvas / Open a closed course for a student

Objective

• To provide instruction on allowing a student to have access to a closed Canvas course when:
  • Your student needs to submit an assignment in a closed Canvas course
  • You need to let a student take a quiz or exam in a closed Canvas course
  • You want to give a student access to an old course or a completed class

Cause

• Canvas course sites automatically close at the end of each term. You must extend the end-date of the course and the section to open the course and allow a student to access the course
  • Changing the end-date of the course and the section will open the course for all enrolled students

Resolution

1. If you did not change the course end date before the end of the term, submit a ticket requesting that the course be reopened
2. Provide the following information:

• Course number
• Course section
• Last date student users should have access to the course

Notes

• Before the end of a term you can extend the end-date of the course and the section

  • This Canvas Instructor Guide tells you how to edit a section to adjust section end dates to match the course dates
• When finished, be sure to set the course end-date back to the end of term or a specific end date to close the course
