SOP #422: Pesticide Application

Body

Purpose and Scope

To establish a policy and procedure for the application of pesticides including Herbicides, Insecticides and Fungicides.  In keeping with PFD's mission to "maintain a safe and attractive campus" and also being sensitive to the use of pesticides on campus, PFD follows the philosophy and principles of Integrated Pest Management.  Those principles include: inspections, monitoring, sanitation, preventative practices for urban pest management; using correct cultural controls in plant selection, planting, fertilizing, irrigation, weeding, mowing and pruning techniques; constant monitoring of plant material for horticultural pest management; and as a last resort, the responsible use of pesticides.

Policy

The Senior Director of Operations, Director of Grounds, Facilities Directors of the Regional Campuses (Hamilton & Middletown), Pest Control Technician, and the Senior Grounds Manager are the only authorized individuals permitted to direct a pesticide application.

Only personnel certified by the Ohio Department of Agriculture are authorized to supervise pesticide applications.  All personnel making pesticide applications will be trained as per Ohio Department of Agriculture Pesticide Regulations.

This policy applies to the main campus and the two regional campuses.

Procedure

  1. In the event of an unscheduled exterior pesticide application, the building or area "point of contact" will be notified by phone a minimum of three hours prior to the application.
  1. When pesticide applications on turf are applied, temporary signage (4" X 5", and 14" above the ground) will be placed at conspicuous points of entry into the turf area prior to the application and be left there for a minimum of 24 hours.
  2. Building Point of Contact will be notified prior to any interior pesticide application.
