Authenticate when traveling in China / Duo

Problem

• How do I use Duo two-factor authentication when away traveling in China?
• What authentication methods can I use when traveling or studying in China?

Rationale

• Two-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your Miami account. It allows you to verify your identity using a second factor — your smartphone or other mobile device, YubiKey U2F device — and prevents anyone else from logging in to your account
• Duo works with Android and iOS devices through the Duo Mobile app to support authentication via Duo Push (recommended) and Duo Passcode
• In March 2019, China rolled out new regulations that may disrupt the functionality of Duo SMS text authentication methods​​​​​​

Resolution 

• While in China, the Duo SMS text option may not function as expected. We recommend using one of the following options to authenticate with Duo from China:
  • Duo Mobile App Push
    • Note that users with Android devices may need to 'fetch' Duo Pushes by opening the Duo Mobile App on their device and swiping down to receive the Push rather than just waiting for the notification to be received

  • Duo Mobile App Passcode
