Canvas / Create a nickname for a course

Objective

• To provide a rationale for applying a nickname to an auto-generated course name
• To provide a link to Canvas Guide instructions on creating a nickname for a course when: 
  • You want to change the name of your Canvas course

Environment

Cause

• Canvas course names are generated automatically for student-enrolled courses based on the section(s) in the course 

Resolution

• If the course is a student-enrolled course that is set up through Banner, you cannot change the Canvas course name
• This Canvas Guide article will tell you how to create a nickname for your course
  • Be sure to scroll down the page to Create Nickname if the link does not jump to the appropriate section
  • Note that creating a course nickname affects the name only for the individual user who added it. It will not affect the course name for other users
• To request a change to the name of a personal, program, or department project site, refer to the instructions in the KB article
