Personal Computer / Disconnect from the Miami Entra domain

Body

Objective

  • To provide instruction on disconnecting your personal computer from Miami's Entra domain

Scope

  • During a new computer's out-of-box experience, users are prompted to select whether they want to set up the computer as a personal computer or as a Work or School Device. If you accidentally selected to set up the computer as a Work or School Device and logged in with your Miami credentials, you joined your computer to Miami's Entra domain and configured your Miami Entra ID to be the administrator for the computer. This Miami account becomes disabled once you are no longer an active student, and this will lock you out of your device
  • You must fix this issue prior to graduation or leaving the University to prevent being locked out of your personal device

Environment

  • 208058: Personal End User Device Placeholder
    • Personally Owned Computer
  • (no asset record): Entra
  • 199772: BitLocker Drive Encryption

Procedure

  1. Sign in to the computer with your Miami credentials
    • If your Miami Entra ID has already been disabled and you cannot sign in, submit a ticket with IT Services for assistance
  2. Create a new user account on the computer
    1. Open Settings> Accounts> Other Users, and select Add account
    2. You can add either a personal Microsoft account or you can create a local account on the computer. If you want to use a personal Microsoft account, enter the email address for your personal Microsoft account. If you want to create a local account or don't have an existing personal Microsoft account, select I don't have this person's sign-in information. You can then enter an email to create a new Microsoft account or select Add a user without a Microsoft account to make a local account
  3. Make the new account an administrator
    1. Select the newly created account
    2. Click the Change account type button
    3. Choose the Administrator option
  4. Backup your BitLocker recovery key if stored in Entra
    • If you have encrypted your device with Bitlocker and chose to store the recovery key in Entra when encrypting, open a web browser and navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list then sign in with your Miami credentials
    • Click View Bitlocker Keys for the device you are about to disconnect then click show recovery key. Copy that key and store it somewhere secure.
    • Note that any Bitlocker recovery keys stored in our Entra domain for your computer will be deleted after disconnecting in the next step.
  5. Disconnect the computer from Entra
    1. Go to Settings> Accounts> Access Work or School
    2. Select your Miami account to expand the options, click Disconnect, and then Yes on the prompt
    3. You should be prompted to Enter alternate account info to make sure you have another account created. Use the credentials you created above. If you made a local account, enter the username as .\username
    4. You should then get prompted to Restart Now to finish the process
  6. Migrate your user profile data
    1. Sign in to your computer with your newly created credentials
    2. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Users
    3. You should see a user profile folder named for your old Miami account, as well as a new folder for your newly created account
    4. You may want to copy data from your documents, downloads, pictures, and desktop folders from the old profile to the new profile
