Procedure: Lucidchart / Import Visio file

Body

Objective

  • To provide instruction on importing a Visio file in to Lucidchart

Scope

  • MUIT Visio files are stored in the Google Drive, Application Domain > Application-System Representations
  • Lucidchart supports import from Microsoft Visio (.vdx, .vsdx, and .vsd), Gliffy (.gxml, .gliffy), Draw.io (.xml), and OmniGraffle (.graffle, .graffle.zip)
  • Lucidchart currently supports the following Visio formats:
    • VSDX files made with Microsoft Visio 2013 or later. (VSDX files tend to import with greater fidelity than other Visio formats)
    • VSD files made with Microsoft Visio 2007 or later
    • VDX files made with Microsoft Visio 2003 or later
    • If you have an older Visio file, re-save it to a more recent version of Microsoft Visio as a .vsdx file, and import the new file into Lucidchart

User

  • Licensed MUIT Staff

Environment

  • 1407771: Lucidchart

Procedure

Import a Visio diagram into Lucidchart

Note: Before importing your Visio file into Lucidchart, save your Visio document as a .vsdx file

  1. Log in to your Lucidchart account
  2. Click the +New button
  3. Hover your cursor over Lucidchart
  4. Hover over Import
  5. Select Visio as the source from which you are importing
  6. Go to Application-System Representations and choose the appropriate application or system folder
  7. Choose the file(s) to upload
    • Lucid recommends importing no more than 10 files at a time
  8. Check the box to Convert to Lucidchart Shapes (Beta)
  9. Click the Import button
  • Once the file has been imported, the diagram link will be available in the import pop up — just click View document. You can also find the imported file saved in your Documents page as a new document

Import within a Lucidchart document

Note: Before importing your Visio file into Lucidchart, save your Visio document as a .vsdx file

  1. In Lucidchart, select File from the menu bar
  2. Hover over Import Diagram
  3. Select Visio as the source from which you are importing
  4. Go to Application-System Representations and choose the appropriate application or system folder
  5. Choose the file(s) to upload
    • Lucid recommends importing no more than 10 files at a time
  6. Check the box to Convert to Lucidchart Shapes (Beta)
  7. Click the Import button
  • The imported file will be saved in your Documents page as a new document

Troubleshoot import issues

  • Verify that the file works in its original application. If the file doesn’t work in its original application, Lucidchart cannot import it correctly. Save the document in the latest version of Visio (Microsoft Visio 2013 or later) as a .vsdx file and try to upload it again
  • Check the file size. Lucidchart has a file size limit of 100 MB for importing files. If your original file is too big, reduce the file size and try to upload it again
    1. Compress or reduce images in the diagram
    2. If your file has a lot of content or multiple pages, split your document into multiple documents with fewer pages and/or objects
    3. Save the file in the latest version of Visio (Microsoft Visio 2013 or later) as a .vsdx file. VSDX files are generally smaller than VDX files

Notes

  • For more information, register and experience Lucidchart's course on transitioning to Lucidchart
  • Can I import a PDF or image into Lucidchart to create an editable diagram? No. While you can insert a PDF into a Lucidchart document as an image, you cannot make a PDF or image file editable in Lucidchart
