Problem
- How do I use VeraCrypt software to set up encrypted containers on external drives?
Scope
- Portable media used to store patient data in the Psychology Department Clinic must be encrypted
- Encryption for Personal Protected Identifying Information (PII) covered by FERPA and HIPAA collected in the Psychology Clinic
Resolution
- Launch VeraCrypt software
- From VeraCrypt menu, choose Create New Volume
- Create an encrypted file container
- Next
- From Encryption Options, select defaults
- Next
- From Volume Size, choose appropriate size for flash drive in GB
- Next
- In Volume Password, user choice
- Next
- OK to acknowledge
- In Format Options, exFAT
- Next
- In Cross-Platform Support, I will mount the volume on other platforms
- Next
- OK to acknowledge
- In Volume Format, move mouse cursor until progress bar has moved across dialog box
- Format
- Format process will be lengthy, depending on size of encrypted container on flash drive
- Click OK to acknowledge completion of format
- Exit
Notes
- Software downloaded from VeraCrypt
- macOS must also download and install OSXFUSE to mount encrypted volumes via Finder
