Google Services / Troubleshoot screen rendering issues

Objective

  • To provide troubleshooting guidance for screen rendering issues in a Google service when:
    • Your Gmail and Drive are flashing or flickering on the screen

Environment

  • 11357: Google Apps
  • Chrome
  • Gmail
  • Drive

Resolution

Try the following troubleshooting options to restore screen rendering properties in Google apps:

  1. Delete your cache and cookies
  2. Disable Flash (without extension)
    1. In your Chrome browser, click the stacked dots icon in the upper-right corner and select Settings from the drop-down
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page and click the Advanced option
    3. Under Privacy and Security, select Content settings
    4. Scroll to Flash and click the arrow on the right end of the row 
    5. Next to Always allow to run, click the slider button to grey to prevent Chrome from automatically running Flash in websites
      • Note: If you need to play a Flash video, activate the app in the site by using the right mouse button 
      • Hint: Follow this link to the Chrome Web Store and search for a Flash Control extension that will help you block Flash files in any website you open
  3. Use Chrome's incognito mode to identify the problem-extension
    1. In your Chrome browser, click the stacked dots icon in the upper-right corner and select New Incognito Window from the drop-down
    2. Enter chrome://extensions in the search bar
    3. One at a time, clear the Enabled box next to the extension name
      • Each time you disable an extension, check to see if your Google app screen it is still flashing
    4. If identified, delete the problem-extension by clicking the trashcan icon next to the name
  4. Restore default browser settings
    1. In your Chrome browser, click the stacked dots icon in the upper-right corner and select Settings from the drop-down
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page and click the Advanced option
    3. Scroll down to the Reset section and select Reset to restore Chrome's original default settings
      • Note: This will reset your start-up page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs; and disable all extensions and clear temporary data. Your bookmarks, history, and saved passwords will not be cleared
    4. In the Reset pop-up window, confirm by clicking the Reset ​box
  5. Turn off hardware acceleration
    1. In your Chrome browser, click the stacked dots icon in the upper-right corner and select Settings from the drop-down
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page and click the Advanced option
    3. Scroll down to the System section and c
    4. Next to Use hardware acceleration when available, click the slider button to grey to deactivate acceleration
